Eric -7 Years of age

There comes a time in everyone's life when one has to stand up and try to make a difference, not matter how small that difference may be.

Eleven years ago last September, my son Eric was born. Although a joyful moment, it was filled with trials and tribulations no parent would ever hope or wish to face. Eric was born three months premature and spent the first four and half months of his fragile start to life in intensive care.

Under the watchful eyes of the hospital's medical staff and the constant vigilance of both Claudine and myself, Eric began to grow and develop.

Shortly after being discharged from hospital we would soon learn that Eric was born with Mowat-Wilson Syndrome and one of the effects of this syndrome is a severe visual impairment and that at best he would have only a light/dark perception of the world around him. Eric's optic nerves had not developed nor connected properly and one of his eyes was totally disorganised leading to the need of an artificial shell being worn over the non-viable eye in order to allow his face to grow symmetrically. He would not be able to read a book or view a website the same way you and I are able to. He would not be able to see a flower bloom, enjoy a cartoon on television or see the faces of his parents who love him more than life itself.

As any parent would do, doctors were spoken to and research was commenced in order to find out what advances in medical science have been achieved to date. All this in the hope that one day something could be done in order to help Eric see the world the way so many of us do.

Medical science has come a long way over the past 10-15 years and will continue to do so but sadly, very little can be done to help him regain his ability to see.

Until such time that medical advancements can help Eric, my wife and I are working feverishly to ensure that everything that can be done to help Eric with his orientation skills, mobility and very limited visual needs.  The Ponds of Wonder was written and dedicated to Eric and all proceeds collected from digital copy sales will be going entirely to help fund Eric's needs.

How can you help?

As an educator and a firm believer in the importance of encouraging the love of reading in today's youth, in purchasing a digital copy of the book you will be granting me the opportunity to motivate and stimulate your child's imagination and in turn, my wife and I can utilise the proceeds for Eric's needs.

Together each and every one of us can make a difference towards helping to improve children's love for reading while at the same time improving the quality of life for my little boy.......I sincerely hope you will consider acquiring a digital copy at the special price of only 3 Euro. If you do not live in Europe, you will be billed in your local currency for the equivalent amount. Thank you in advance for your contribution to reading and to Eric.
